P.G.Diploma in Environmental Law
Our country confronts with severe environmental constraints due to its limited
natural resources combined with high population pressure resulting in problem of
water, sewage, waste disposal and other forms related to poverty and infectious
diseases. There are also new problem of industrial pollution, agrochemicals and
hazardous wastes. Although modernization and urbanization have blessed the
society with a lot of amenities and comforts, they have aggravated environmental
hazards and deterioration. There was no serious environmental consciousness in
India during the early periods of developmental programme after independence.
There were, therefore, no general provisions in Part IV and Part IV A of the
constitution. Various efforts are now being made to control Indian environmental
problems. The number of public litigation cases related to the environment has
significantly increased. Many major environmental judgments have been delivered.
The judiciary has emerged as an important pro-environmental factor, especially
after the Bhopal accident. Public action groups have appeared through out the
country and there has been an enormous growth in the literature on environmental
problems from technical, social and policy perspectives.
Environmental law has now become an independent discipline. In order
to increase awareness among the public on the relevance of various Indian
environmental laws, more particularly to the practicing Advocates, Bureaucrats,
Technocrats, and members of the NGOs engaged in environmental conservations and
management, the Sambalpur University is offering a P.G. Diploma course in
